About

The UPR Academic Network (UPRAN) brings together a diverse and global network of researchers and academics working on the UN Human Rights Council’s UPR mechanism. The UPRAN was founded by academics at Birmingham City University’s Centre for Human Rights (England) and the University of Stirling (Scotland).  For more information on the team click here.

The objective is to bring together a network of UPR researchers and academics to share the nature of UPR research already undertaken, exchange ideas for collaboration, and consider new perspectives and under-researched aspects of the UPR over the last three cycles.

This website will provide you with a list of academics working on the UPR across the globe, current projects on the UPR, and a list of publications on the mechanism ranging from PhD theses to journal articles and more.

The UPR vision

“country scrutiny [should] be exercised through an effective, fair and transparent system of peer review that should be built on the principle of universal scrutiny.”

Kofi Annan

“The universal periodic review should be conducted in an objective, transparent, non-selective, constructive, non‑confrontational and non‑politicized manner”

A/HRC/RES/5/1

“For such a system to be credible and gain the confidence of all, it will be essential that a fair and transparent method be developed to compile information upon which to base the peer review”

Kofi Annan
